Every February since 1961, fans have flocked to Southern California for one of drag racing’s grandest traditions: The unveiling of new cars, drivers, teams, and sponsorships at the season opener, where teams hope to use the season kickoff as a springboard in their pursuit of a spot in the Countdown to Championshipat the fabled Pomona facility known for its outstanding traction, smooth surface, and record performances.

2011 recap: Morgan Lucas (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car), and Jason Line (Pro Stock) kicked off NHRA’s 60th Anniversary season with victories. Fans also witnessed great performances during the four-day event, including the fastest Top Fuel speed and second-quickest pass, plus the fourth-fastest Top Fuel speed, the third- and sixth-quickest Funny Car
e.t.s, and the third-fastest Pro Stock speed.

Helio Castroneves had to remind himself to brake with his left foot during two days of driving the Chevrolet development car this week at Sebring International Raceway.

Accustomed to right-foot braking his entire career — and in passenger cars — the new DW12 chassis has two pedals instead of three (third for clutch). For 2012, the clutch joins the paddle shift system in the steering wheel.

“It will take some time to adapt, but that’s why we’re out here testing,” the Team Penske driver said. “Actually, it’s kind of fun; like go-karts. The only car I drove (with left-foot braking) was in a Formula One test in 2002.”

The three-time Indianapolis 500 champion was joined during the two-day session on the 1.7-mile short course by teammates Ryan Briscoe and Will Power, JR Hildebrand, Scott Dixon, Graham Rahal, Tony Kanaan, E.J. Viso, Marco Andretti, Simon Pagenaud, and Simona de Silvestro.

The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities will present the second annual Laps for Charity at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, Jan. 29 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

NASCAR fans and auto enthusiasts alike will have the unique opportunity to drive their personal car around LVMS’ 1.5-mile superspeedway at speeds up to 75 mph (behind a pace car), all in the name of charity. Laps for Charity is open to all licensed drivers 18 years of age and older and the entry fee only is $30 per vehicle for three laps. Drivers may have their picture taken in LVMS’ victory lane for an additional donation of only $10. All occupants of the car must be at least 6 years of age or older. The vehicle must be street legal and have a current inspection sticker. Car clubs are welcome to participate.All proceeds from Laps for Charity will benefit the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities. A total of 750 cars were entered in the inaugural event in 2011 and more than $25,000 was raised for local children’s causes.
